As one of a handful of companies worldwide, Hable are accredited to deliver Microsoft’s flagship Education Transformation Framework and their excellent device deployment programme the Project Management Resource Kit.
After visits to South Africa, Georgia and Kazakhstan last year, we were delighted to be invited to deliver a further workshop in Tashkent, Uzbekistan this November, combining these 2 courses. Following research and communication with our customer, we adapted the materials to suit their requirements and incorporated the best and most applicable materials adding in our own activities, experience and stories to fit the purpose. So, Day One became “A Vision for Change” and, Day Two “Making it Happen”.
Delegates from the Ministry of Public Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan were joined by the team from the government-funded Centre for the Development of ICT in Public Education and 2 school Principals. We were also accompanied by Microsoft CEE Education and Solution Specialist Teodora Varbanova who had laid much of the groundwork for this visit.
We learned of the challenges facing this beautiful but still developing country where the median age of the population is 27 (c.f. 41 in the UK) and where 40% of the population is under 18. Where access to the internet is limited or non-existent in schools and where electricity or a roof may be a more pressing concern. And yet, their vision for how technology can and could be part of the transformation of education in Uzbekistan is unequivocal. And with this energy, commitment and government investment, prospects look very good. We have much to learn.

At the start of the day 1, we benchmarked delegates’ aspirations – to learn new ideas, to explore new tools for the classroom, to be better prepared to develop the IT skills of the next generation, to develop a more personalised curriculum, to gain insights about teachers’ CPD. At the end of day 2, we were delighted to discover the delegates all reported these aspirations had been met.
We shared stories of good practice from around the globe, held a conference call with Mark Reynolds sharing the work Hable has supported in JESS Schools in Dubai, gave hands on training with Office 365 tools ( Forms, Teams and Sway were very popular), and even tried out Hable’s Education Transformation Framework (ETF) app which is in development to support this programme. Oh and we ate Plov – lots of it!
We also made the national news! Unfortunately Microsoft translator has yet to incorporate Uzbek as one of its languages but coming soon hopefully. You can read the news here and here (we hope your Uzbek is better than ours).
Thanks to our wonderfully kind hosts (why is it that people who have less are always more generous?). We got to see a bit more of the capital city in the evenings including the vibrant local market, amazing white marble public buildings and the best underground you’ve ever seen!
Overall, an amazing experience, a lot of lessons learned, and the satisfaction of a job well done. This country, which we never really could place on a map before now, has become one we will watch with interest and optimism, firm in the belief that Education, enhanced with all the wealth of opportunities that technology can bring, can really be ‘the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world’ ( Nelson Mandela).
